The key aspect to being an incident commander is always having the ability to describe the situation. To make this easy, we want the IC to always think in terms of a CAN report: Conditions, Actions and Needs. When the IC uses this format they always have the ability to accurately describe the current status of the event. When the IC needs information from their subject matter experts (SMEs) they should receive information in this same format. When everyone understands the terminology and information flow, considerable time is shaved from the incident resolution time.
